Why Have a School Lunch?
Hampshire County Council Catering Services (HC3S) endeavours to provide each primary age child at schools where we provide the catering, with a healthy, tasty, value for money meal.
Parents should note that all Key Stage 1 children (reception, year 1 and year 2) are entitled to a Universal Infant Free School Meal. There is no charge for the meal and no registration requirement. However, schools are encouraging parents who meet the standard free school meals elibility criteria to continue to register as this will provide the school with additional funding to help support children at school.
The cost of our meals is £2.10 and will stay at this price through to April 2017. There is a daily choice of either a meat or non meat main item, and this comes with a carbohydrate (i.e. potatoes, rice, pasta), vegetables and salad. Dessert is a choice of fresh fruit, yoghurt, rice pot, fruity pot, cheese and biscuits, fruit juice or the daily pudding being offered.
The primary meals are also nut free, which means that any child with a nut allergy can eat regularly with us and does not need to be registered for a special diet.
HC3S continues to keep to the Hyperactive Children's Support Group's recommendations to remove over 70 additives and colourings that could affect children's behaviour. In addition, local produce is used wherever possible, for example, free range eggs from the New Forest area and apple juice from Selborne.
As mentioned earlier, if you believe your child is entitled to standard free school meals, we have an online service to allow parents to check their eligibility for free school meals. Parents can enter their details and those of their child to get an immediate result and if eligible, this information will go direct to their child's school to inform them of the entitlement. This will help funding for schools, even if your child is in Key Stage 1.
Finally, please remember that HC3S we can provide medically requested special diets for various allergies, however all requests for these must be accompanied by medical evidence of each allergy.
If you have any questions about our food or special diets, please call us on 023 8062 7730.
