The School Food Plan

Following a review of school food in England, John Vincent and Henry Dimbleby launched the School Food Plan in July 2013.

This plan, supported by the Secretary of State for Education and a number of organisations, contains a list of actions and recommendations that aim to help head teachers improve food culture and meal uptake in their schools.

As of part of this plan, from September 2014 the government started funding free school meals for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils, resulting in an additional 1.5 million children entitled to a free lunch. This increased demand for school lunches will present both opportunities and challenges for school caterers.

Universal free school meals were just one of the recommendations made in the School Food Plan last year. A further 16 actions for the Department of Education, LACA and other key organisations were also agreed and can be found in the School Food Plan.
