Catey Award Winners

Surrey Commercial Services food development team are honoured to have won the Food Service Catey 2017 Procurement Team of the Year Award. The award ceremony organised and hosted by The Caterer recognises individuals, teams and businesses which shape the foodservice industry.

The team, headed up by Mark Capper, Development Manager - Food & Marketing, was recognised for their outstanding service, providing circa 70,000 meals per day for pupils in Surrey and continually raising standards by adding value to school food provision through food innovation. Surrey’s primary school meals are accredited with the Soil Associations Food for Life ‘Gold’ standard and 90% of its menus are cooked from scratch using fresh quality ingredients daily.

The team works closely in collaboration with their procurement partner, Pelican Procurement Services, who with numerous producers, suppliers and manufacturers sourced quality local and regional foods (including organic produce) in support of the 13.6 million meals served per year using 80% of ingredients sourced within the UK.

The team has achieved a reputation for serving great quality foods, using the finest honestly sourced ingredients, whilst maintaining agreed menu costs providing a value for money service to parents.

Beverley Baker, Head of Commercial Services at Surrey County Council said: “We are extremely proud of our food development team and their achievements. Food procurement is a very important part of what we do, we develop, design and deliver innovative menu solutions and special diets to a diverse customer base. Our success has been achieved through the hard work of our staff and smart procurement, saving us £147K in 2016 and £45K in 2017 (year to date). Meal numbers have also continued to rise. These savings have all been re-invested in improving the quality of the food we purchase, such as procuring our organic produce. Due to these savings, all menus have remained within the agreed costs.”

Gabrielle Efford, Procurement and Supply Chain Manager at Pelican Procurement Services, who manages the procurement and supply chain for Surrey Commercial services said: “We are delighted to work with Surrey supporting their team in achieving their goals. We would like to extend our congratulations to the food development team and the whole organisation on this great achievement!

The judges commented: ‘The competition was very tough but Commercial Services truly deserved to win’.
